Boktips! Sommeren 2009 seilte jeg som 1st Mate en Amerikansk 52 fots seilbåt ved navn Maryam. Turen gikk langs Vikingruta fra Bergen til Newport USA. Når vi kom til den lokale seilforeningens brygge i Reykjavik, Island, så vi en liten båt med blant andre det amerikanske flagget. De fleste ombord proklamerte at de umulig kunne ha kommet helt i fra USA i det knøttet av en båt. Jeg, på den annen side, hadde vokst opp med Ragnar Thorseth i nabobygda. Med tanke på Ragnars fantastiske eventyr, mente jeg at det ikke skulle være umulig at de hadde kommet den lange veien. Så snart vi hadde fortøyd Maryam, gikk vi over til båten. De andre fortsatte å diskutere... Plutselig så vi bevegelse, først så vi et ansikt komme fram fra et surfboardcover, så et fra under en pressenning... Det var Ralph og Bob Brown. Og de HADDE seilt på egen kjøl fra Florida....Vel... Det er vel ikke helt rett: For det første hadde de ikke seilt, men gått for motor(15 og 140 hk utenbordsmotorer). For det andre hadde de ingen kjøl... Båten var og er firkantet og flatbunnet, og bare 21 fot! Gutta hadde hatt en fantastisk, kald, strevsom og tidvis dramatisk tur, og de var bare kommet halveis.... Selv skulle vi seile videre til Grønland, Canada og USA. Og selv om også vi oppleve litt dramatikk, var det for oss hverken særlig strevsomt eller kaldt. Og når vi kom til Newport, Rhode Island, hadde vi hatt en fantastisk tur. Vikingruta til USA kan jeg varmt anbefale.... Vel....du bør kanskje vurdere ei litt større skute enn Bob og Ralph sin...... The trip went along the Viking Route from Bergen Norway, to Newport USA. When we arrived at the local sailing club's dock in Reykjavik Iceland, we saw a small boat with among others the American flag. Almost all onboard proclaimed that they could not possibly have come all the way from the United States in the that little nutshell of a boat. I, on the other hand, had grown up with Ragnar Thorseth in the neighboring village. Given Ragnar's amazing adventures, I thought it would not be impossible that they had come a long way. As soon as we had docked Maryam, we walked over to the boat. The others continued to discuss ... Suddenly we saw movement, first we saw a face appear from a surfboard cover, then one from under a tarpaulin ... It was Ralph and Bob Brown. And they HAD sailed on they're own keel all the way from Florida .... Well ... It's not quite right: Firstly, they had not sailed, but motored (15 and 140 hp outboard motors). Secondly, they had no keel... The boat was as square as it was flat-bottomed, and only 21 feet! The guys had a great, cold, arduous and sometimes dramatic trip, and they were only half the way .... Although we would sail on to Greenland, Canada and the United States. And even though we experience a bit of drama, it was for us neither particularly arduous or cold. And by the time we arrived in Newport, Rhode Island, we'd had a fantastic trip. Sailing the old Viking route to America or the other way to Norway, is something I can recommend highly.... Well .... You might want to consider a slightly larger vessel than Bob and Ralph's ...... Read the book!
